Tips For Naming the New Born Muslim Baby

Having a child is one of the biggest happiness that parents feel when they hold their child for the first time. Kids tender and innocent and they depend completely on their parents with respect to their lives and their needs. When a baby is born, the first thing parents like to do is to name them so that they can call their kid by some name. But there are so many names that choosing the one will be the most difficult thing for the parents.

In the process of decision making, child remains nameless for some months or even for a year or two. This is good to think of a beautiful name but in order to look for beauty and uniqueness one should not forget that the name should be the one with the best and beautiful meaning.

Naming kids with modern names is in fashion but their meanings should be known because names reflect their meanings in the personality of the kid.

There is a hadith of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w about naming the boy:
Abu Dawood Book 41, Number 4932:

Narrated AbuWahb al-Jushami:  The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Call yourselves by the names of the Prophets. The names dearest to Allah are Abdullah and AbdurRahman, the truest are Harith and Hammam, and the worst are Harb and Murrah.

This hadith does not only indicate the names liked by ALLAH swt, but also give us a hint to name the kids with the best meanings. Only the words that sound good shuld nto be given as name to the kid because they can mean bad.

Similarly in another place Muhammad s.a.w.w said:

Sahih Muslim Book 025, Number 5340:

Anas b. Malik reported: I took 'Abdullah b. Abi Talha Ansari to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) at the time of his birth. Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) was at that time wearing a woollen cloak and besmearing the camels with tar. He said: Have you got with you the dates? I said: Yes. He took hold of the dates and put them in his mouth and softened them, then opened the mouth of the infant and put that in it and the child began to lick it. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: The Ansar have a liking for the dates, and he (the Holy Prophet) gave him the name of 'Abdullah.

Thus prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w gave the name “abdullah” to the kid. Abdullah means slave of ALLAH. This name has the most beautiful meaning because all of us are slaves of ALLAH swt.

The name “Al-Qasim” cannot be given to a kid since Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w disliked it and changed this name when it was given to a kid.

Sahih Bukhari

Volume 8, Book 73, Number 208:

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah:

A man among us begot a boy whom he named Al-Qasim. The people said (to him), "We will not call you Abul-l-Qasim, nor will we please you by calling you so." The man came to the Prophet and mentioned that to him. The Prophet said to him, "Name your son 'Abdur-Rahman.

Name can be given to a kid on the day he/ she is born or it can be given to him/her on the 7th day of aqeeqah. It is proven from the sahih hadith mentioned below:

Narrated by Muslim, 3126

It was reported that Anas ibn Maalik said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “A boy was born to me this night and I have named him with the name of my father Ibraaheem.”

Narrated by Ibn Hibbaan, 12/127; al-Haakim, 4/264

It was reported that ‘Aa’ishah said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did ‘aqeeqah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn on the seventh day, and gave them their names. (Classed as saheeh by al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Baari, 9/589).

To conclude, names should be given to kids that have the modest meanings so that they can reflect from the personality of the kid when he grows up and mere good sounding names should not be given to children without knowing their meanings.

Also, when naming a kid with the attributes of ALLAH swt, the word “abdur” should be added to show that the person is slave of the Creator.
